LA ESGRIMISTA PARAPLÉJICA GEMA HASSEN-BEY RECORRIÓ LAS CALLES DE MADRID PORTANDO LA ANTORCHA OLÍMPICA
FUE LA ÚNICA DEPORTISTA DE ÉLITE DISCAPACITADA
La antorcha olímpica ha desfilado por las calles de Madrid y Barcelona durante el pasado fin de semana. En la capital, la llama recorrió 12,150 kilómetros en manos de 30 relevistas entre los que figuraba la esgrimista parapléjica Gema Hassen-Bey, medallista en los Juegos Paralímpicos de Barcelona´92 y Atlanta´96.Hassen-Bey, que competirá en los Juegos Paralímpicos de Atenas 2004, tomó el penúltimo relevo de manos del futbolista Kiko.
Ella fue la encargada de pasar la antorcha al alcalde de Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, quien, a su vez, se la entregó al Príncipe de Asturias para que prendiese el fuego olímpico en el pebetero instalado en la Puerta de Alcalá.Al acto asistieron la princesa de Asturias, Doña Leticia Ortiz; el presidente del Gobierno, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero; la presidenta de la Comunidad de Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre; el presidente del Comité Olímpico Español (COE), José María Echevarría y el secretario general del Comité Paralímpico Español (CPE), Miguel Sagarra.
Tan sólo unos minutos antes, el símbolo olímpico había recorrido las calles madrileñas en manos de deportistas como el waterpolista Manel Estiarte, la nadadora Nina Zhivanevskaia, medallistas olímpicos como el balonmanista Rafael Guijosa y la judoka Miriam Blasco y periodistas como Matías Prats e Inmaculada Galván.
Tras su paso por Madrid, la antorcha viajó a Barcelona donde hizo un recorrido de 49,5 kilómetros. El trayecto comenzó en el estadio Olímpico de Montjuïc Lluís Companys con una actuación de Montserrat Caballé y concluyó en las fuentes de Montjuïc tras atravesar la ciudad y pasar por el recinto del Forum Universal de las Culturas Barcelona 2004.Tras este viaje por España, la antorcha ha continuado un periplo que, por primera vez en la historia olímpica, incluye los cinco continentes. Sus siguientes escalas son Roma, Múnich, Berlín, Estocolmo, Helsinki, Moscú, Kiev, Estambul, Sofía y Nicosia, desde donde volverá a Grecia tras haber recorrido 1.500 kilómetros por tierra y 78.000 por el aire.
